Abstract:Intervertebral disc degeneration can cause chronic back pain ,sensory disturbance and dyskinesia. The incidence of human intervertebral disc degeneration has been increasing with the prolongation of human life span, which has caused enormous financial burden to society. The current treatment methods include conservative treatment and surgical treatment, but they can only reduce or eliminate symptoms, instead of restoring the normal tissue structure and intrinsic function of the disc, and there are many complications. Since the quantity of cells in degenerative disc decreases and the function declines, cell therapy which means delivering cells to the disc can increase the content of proteoglycan and collagen in the nucleus pulposus, restore the normal tissue structure and biomechanical function of the disc, and it is expected to realize the regeneration of the disc. This article reviews the current research progress of cell therapy.
