Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the beneficial and side effects of acupuncture on sciatica caused by lumbar disc herniation, as well as the acupuncture-responsive population. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks after acupuncture treatment from 67 cases of sciatica caused by lumbar disc herniation. Results: The overall cure and effective rates of acupuncture were 60.0% and 86.7%, respectively. VAS and JOA scores significantly decreased after 2 weeks’ (p < 0.05) and 4 and 8 weeks’ (p < 0.01) treatment. Patients aged between 40-50 years with a disease course of <12 month were most responsive to acupuncture treatment. Conclusion: Acupuncture treatment alleviates sciatica caused by lumbar disc herniation, and early intervention is beneficial for recovery.
