Abstract:Objective: To determine whether interleukin-6(IL-6) is involved in nerve root pain induced by herniated lumbar disc, and to explore the clinical mechanism of Mailuoning. Methods: 24 Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: normal group(Z),sham operation group(K), model group(S) and Mailuoning therapy group(A). The serum levels of IL-6 were measured 18 days after operation. Results: Serum IL-6 in Group A was very low; Groups S had the highest level of IL-6 among the four groups. IL-6 was decreased after epidural injection of Mailuoning and there was no significant difference between normal and Mailuoning groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: IL-6 may play a critical role in the development of nerve root pain. Mailuoning can decrease the serum level of IL-6.
