Abstract:Aim: To observe whether concomitant administration of lidocaine could reduce pain induced by propofol injection. Methods: In a randomized double blind trial, 200 women of ASA status 1 or 2 were allocated to one of four groups to receive 19ml of propofol mixed with either 1ml of 0.9% saline, 1ml of 0.5%(5mg) lidocaine ,1ml of 1%(10mg) lidocaine or 1ml of 2%(20mg) lidocaine. The pain of injection was recorded. Results: Lidocaine reduces the incidence and severity of pain caused by propofol injection, both during induction of anesthesia and as recalled after the surgical operation. A highly significant negative dose response relationship was observed between the dose of lidocaine and the severity of pain ( P <0.001). Conclusion: Lidocaine 20mg premixed with propofol significantly reduces the incidence and severity of pain produced by propofol injection.
