Abstract:In order to clarify the effect of acupuncture on the skin blood flow at the sites of needle insertion and regions distant from the points of needle insertion, we examined blood flow at skin regions before and after acupuncture treatment in patients suffering from low back pain. Measurements of blood flow at the skin were made by non-invasive technique (laser doppler blood-flow-meter and thermography). The results indicated that there was no definite pattern in changes of blood flow after the treatment at the rigions far from the points of needle insertion. An increase in blood flow was found at the sites of needle insertion after manipulating the needle. In light of thes type of limited increase in the skin bind flow induced by needle insertion, the role of nociceptive fiber axon reflex is consideved.
