We collected 472 Chinese words used to describe pain and some words related topain from 507 Chinese questionnaire about pain in this study.All the words were catego rized in four major classes and a number of groups,and then ranked according to thefrequency of appearance. There were 235(nearly 50%)of the woads describing charactersof pain sensation suggesting that these words used to describe sensory characteristics are theprimary part in pain-describing words.47 words were used to describe the intensity and 65words for affection and evaluation.They are also important in pain measurement and evalu ation.In addition, 125 related words were also brought togather.Besides,we found thatpeople had a high level of agreement in some pain-describing words.There words with highfrequency of usage can be the basic words for the language of pain in Chinese.
